Probiotic-rich snack alternatives to keep your gut healthy

If you're like most people, you probably reach for the same unhealthy snacks day after day without giving it a second thought. But what if there were a way to snack smarter and healthier? Probiotic-rich snacks are a great way to do just that! Not only do they taste great, but they're also good for your gut health. So next time you're looking for a snack, reach for one of these probiotic-rich options instead!

Yogurt

Yogurt is a well-known probiotic food that's been consumed for centuries. It's made by fermentation of milk with various bacteria, which gives it its unique flavor and thickness. yogurt is rich in calcium, potassium, and phosphorus, and it also contains live and active cultures of beneficial bacteria. These bacteria help promote a healthy gut by balancing the Microbiome and aiding in digestion. Look for yogurt that contains at least two billion CFUs (colony forming units) of bacteria per serving, and be sure to check the label to make sure it doesn't contain too much sugar. At Everyday Works we offer Lucky Layla - drinkable yogurt, Esti- dairy free yogurt just to name a few!

Pickles

Pickles are cucumbers that have been soaked in brine (water, vinegar, and salt) mixed with spices. As cucumbers soak in the mixture, they undergo fermentation—a process that produces lactic acid. This high level of acidity prevents the growth of harmful bacteria while allowing beneficial probiotic bacteria to thrive. In addition to being a rich source of probiotics, pickles are also low in calories and a good source of vitamins K and A. When purchasing pickles, be sure to buy ones that are labelled " fermented" or "refrigerated" rather than "packaged" or "canned." Stop in to try our variety of pickles like Dilly Bites!

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea that's rich in probiotics and antioxidants. It's made by adding a symbiotic colony of yeast and bacteria (SCOBY) to sweetened black or green tea. This mixture is then left to ferment for 7-14 days. During this time, the SCOBY consumes the sugar in the tea mixture and excretes beneficial acids and enzymes into the tea. The finished product is a slightly effervescent beverage that contains live probiotic cultures along with vitamin B12, enzymes, amino acids, and other compounds that benefit gut health. When purchasing kombucha, be sure to check the label to make sure it contains live cultures of beneficial bacteria—and don't forget to refrigerate it! Our favorite kombucha on the shelf is GT’s guava goddess
